Democracy only works when people understand how — and why — to participate. X_Change is Ground Work Collective’s youth-focused program, active in schools and communities, designed to help young South Africans cut through political noise and take meaningful action.
In the run-up to the 2024 national elections, X_Change helped support over 89,000 new voter registrations. By working with the Independent Electoral Commission, the program promoted participation in a non-partisan way and helped build public confidence in the democratic process. Ground Work Collective used a technology-based digital platform to register new voters across the country.
X_Change is about more than just voting — it’s about bridging the gap between everyday life and democratic decision-making.
X_Change Schools Edition
is an initiative for young people aimed at equipping them with Civic Education knowledge and tools on how to become active citizens in our democracy.
The programme, designed for young people aged 16-years and above was rolled out across different high schools in the country to teach young people about Civic Education in a fun and interactive way through the collaboration of GWC facilitators and teachers.
The programme is carried out using engaging workshops and discussions where learners gain a deeper understanding of their role in democracy, how to participate in elections, and why their vote matters.
As a part of the initiative, GWC assists eligible students with voter registration, ensuring that they are ready to make their X count in the 2026 Local Government Elections.
