What is an Independent Election Observer?
An Independent Election Observer is a trained, non-partisan citizen who monitors elections to ensure they are free, fair, and transparent. Observers do not campaign or interfere with voting; they simply observe and document the process before, during, and after election day to ensure electoral laws and standards are followed.
They help strengthen public trust by identifying irregularities, promoting transparency and supporting accountability in the electoral process.
Through Ground Work Collective’s Protect Our Democracy programme, volunteers receive training in election laws, observation methods, ethics and reporting, and are deployed to voting stations across South Africa.
By becoming an observer, you help protect democracy and ensure every South African can vote with confidence.
Applicants need to have access to the internet and a smart phone device to complete the application.
See democracy in action – and be part of it!
Protect Our Democracy
Protect Our Democracy is one of Ground Work Collective’s key programs, working to support free, fair, and transparent elections in South Africa.
In 2024, we trained over 3,000 independent observers to monitor the national and provincial elections. The program plays a crucial role in breaking down barriers to voting and building trust in our democracy by helping to ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness at the polls. Ground Work Collective uses a first-of-its-kind App available both on- and offline, which can be used by anybody, whether literate or not, and importantly, in all South African languages.
These observers are often young people seeing democracy in action for the first time, and stepping into it.
