PROJECT CITIZEN

Training 500 teachers across South Africa in civic education!

Teacher Training Programme

Most young people in South Africa leave school without a clear understanding of their rights, the Constitution, or how democracy works. That’s because civic education forms only a small part of the Life Orientation curriculum.

Ground Work Collective, working with the IEC, created a new civic education program for Grades 10–12. Delivered by trained teachers, the course helps learners understand their rights and responsibilities, engage with the Constitution, and see how they can make a difference in their communities.

This initiative is designed to equip over 500 teachers across South Africa with in-depth knowledge of civic education beyond the current Life Orientation content they teach their learners. The programme shines the spotlight on strengthening civic literacy among young people by ensuring that educators are well-prepared to teach essential democratic principles in classrooms.

Ground Work Collective rolled out this program at schools in disadvantaged communities where access to civic education is limited. Depending on the demand from schools and teachers, our aim is to expand it to more schools and empower more educators and children.
