Protect Our Democracy
Protect Our Democracy is one of Ground Work Collective’s key programs, working to support free, fair, and transparent elections in South Africa.
It empowers young people to take part in democracy as independent election observers. By seeing the process up close, they gain a deeper understanding of how democracy works — and why it matters.

X_Change
X_Change is Ground Work Collective’s youth-focused program, active in schools and communities across South Africa. It helps young people cut through political noise and take meaningful action — learning how to engage in democracy in real and practical ways.
In the 2024 national elections, X_Change supported over 89,000 new voter registrations. By working closely with the Independent Electoral Commission, the program promotes informed, non-partisan participation and helps build trust in the democratic process.

Project Citizen
Most young people in South Africa leave school without a clear understanding of their rights, the Constitution, or how democracy works.
In partnership with the IEC and the Department of Basic Education, we’ve created a new civic education program for Grades 10–12. Delivered by trained teachers, the course helps learners understand their rights and responsibilities, engage with the Constitution, and see how they can make a difference in their communities.

We’ll use technology to make civic education more accessible, engaging, and fun — especially for young people. From online tools to interactive board games, our resources will help bring democracy to life in classrooms, youth centers, and homes across South Africa.
